A few hours ago we were on our way to the Roadkill Cafe for dinner. We were just cruising along when all of a sudden-

BANG! THUD!

I just barely saw the deer's head go under the hood of the car. We pulled over and walked back to where it had rolled onto the roadside. It was a doe, and one of its back legs was twisted around and it was panting and twitching. To put it out of its misery, as they say, Daddy had to hit it with a shovel. It took him three hits to kill it. Mandy, Brian , and I were told not to look.

Daddy took it pretty hard. He's never run over anything in his whole life, and I could tell he felt really bad about it. Brian was practically beside himself, and for a while he could do anything but sit stock still in the backseat muttering, "Oh my God, oh my God." Mandy was a bit more calm about, being used to this sort of thing since it's next to impossible to live here and not run over any animals. Me, well, I have to admit that at first it didn't really upset me, although I did think it was a shame. It wasn't until a couple of minutes later, when I remembered what deer look like when they run, that it fully hit me. They are beautiful when they run.
