This morning when I woke up, we had run out of oil in the heater. No heat, no hot water. Needless to say, taking a shower was out of the question, so now I feel rather... nasty.

So I went with Dad to the hardware store to buy a plastic gas container and then on to the gas station to pick up some kerosene. (We tried calling the oil companies but no one will come to your house unless you are a regular customer.) Then we got back home and filled up the heater, so now it's warm again and we can do our laundry. I plan to shower later on. I read somewhere that letting the natural oils build up in your hair once in a while promotes healthy hair. Besides, I'm feeling too lazy to bother with one now.

Today I plan to wrap presents, unpack all my stuff, and make an honest attempt to relax. I feel really worn out, and I've been having trouble sleeping at night. I just want to sit around and vegetate for a few hours.

I've spent entirely too much money this month, on presents and necessities and food and a new bathing suit and a book I've been wanting, and just today I got my tuition bill for spring semester, which I wouldn't be able to pay even if I had been a miser all semester. I'm going to have to fill out some more paperwork to try and get more loans or grants or something. It would be easier to get scholarships if I had a clear plan for college in mind, but I'm in the middle of a major switch from chemical engineering to biology, so any engineering scholarships are now out of the question.

I'm glad I'm switching. I think I'm much more suited for the kind of thinking a biologist has to do, since it involves more hands-on stuff than engineering, which is mostly thinking and problem solving. Besides, the math was really slaying me- I just barely got a C in Calc this semester and I don't really think I could handle four more semesters of math. In biology, you only need two semesters, and since I'm taking three more semesters of chem I won't need to take physics either. Best of all, I get way more elctives and way more FREEDOM. The curriculum is nowhere near as strict as engineering, and there's a lot more room to take classes in other subjects.

And besides, I've loved biology ever since I was knee-high to a grasshopper. It's always been one of my favorite subjects, and one that came fairly easily to me. Once I get the switch out of the way and I start my bio classes next year, I think I'm going to enjoy college a lot more.

"It's better to be a good biologist with a strong chem background than a mediocre chemist because you can't handle the math." -Daddy
